Summarizing a StoryMy Six Servants
"I keep six honest serving-men They taught me all I knew; There names are WHAT and WHY and WHEN and HOW and WHERE and WHO. ~Rudyard Kipling, 1865-1936 Who, What, When, Where, Why and How are great resources for helping your child understand and retell fiction reading. Put each word on an index card or down the side of a piece of paper. As you come across the answer to these little words, jot it down on the index card or paper. Then you can string the answers you got together to make a nice summary of your story: (Title of Story or Passage) is about (who or what). It takes place (when) and (where). (What) happens because (why). The conflict got solved by (how). |

Multiplication Math Fact Practice Ideas!
Memorizing multiplication math facts can be a challenging hurdle for students. There are a multitude of resources available to you to help your student find incremental success in this feat.
1. Ask yourself if your student has mastered their addition facts, if they have not, that might be a better place to begin than with multiplication.
2. http://www.bigbrainz.com has a fun multiplication game for students to learn one multiplication set at a time. It worked wonders for Mrs. Faoro's son. He also LOVED it. It is an online game. You are welcome to just play it for free on the website, or you can have it downloaded onto your computer for a fee. They have also created a division fact game new for this school year. This is great for students who love being timed and winning.
3. Print off a blank 12 X 12 multiplication grid (click here for a link to one you can print out) and have your student complete it each Monday. You can allow the student to use it for the entire week, unless they lose it, then they must print out another one and fill it out again. At the end of the week, use your shredder (or just simply rip it up together). On the following Monday, print out another one and they can fill it in again for use for that week. This works well for students who do not work well under timed pressure.
4. http://www.ixl.com is a resource that LVS provides its students an account within. Your student's username is their full name followed by 867, so for example, Lisasmith867 would be the username for Lisa Smith. Contact your Education Specialist for their password for IXL. Within the 3rd grade resources is a place for students to have practice in multiplication for one number at a time.
5. Good old flash cards - remember around the world - see if you can come up with a NEW way to complete around the world in YOUR house "Homeschool Style".
